Coming soon near you: Climate change

A new research report from RICS, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, looks at the likely impact of global warming in eight European countries and provides property and built environment professionals with an interactive online toolkit that helps them to understand the risks that climate change may pose to commercial property and to plan ahead for the probable detrimental impact on value retention.

The report, titled The Climatic Risk Toolkit: the impact of climate change in the non-domestic real estate sector of eight European countries and written by Sturgis Carbon Profiling, focuses on France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. It examines four main areas:

•    who climate change will affect; •    what the energy demand may be; •    what the operational costs may be, and; •    what the carbon emissions are for six types of buildings, namely offices, retail buildings, schools
