Market Focus: Dublin, Ireland

by Joanna Tano and Istvan Toth

Dublin is the capital and most populous city of the Republic of Ireland, with 525,000 inhabitants living within the city boundaries and around 1.3 million in the wider metropolitan area. The city is the centre of the Dublin region and lies in the province of Leinster on Ireland’s east coast.

Like most capital cities, Dublin is the country’s cultural and educational centre as well as the centre of administration, economy and industry. Indeed, 41 percent of the national value-add is created in the capital city, with the financial and insurance sector being the main contributor to Dublin’s economy (23 percent). The traditional manufacturing (eg. Guinness since 1759) and retail sectors, including the city’s thriving market culture, also play a vital role in the city economy, and continue to attract a growing number of tourists each year.
