Market Focus: Gdansk, Poland

by Joanna Tano

Located on the Baltic coast at the mouth of the Motława river, Gdansk is the capital of the Polish voivodeship of Pomerania. It has a population of 460,500 inhabitants and, together with the nearby cities of Gdynia and Sopot (collectively known as the Tricity, or Trójmiasto), it forms Poland’s fourth-largest conurbation, with a population of 748,000. It has been part of modern Poland since 1945.

Gdansk came to prominence as a member of the Hanseatic League, and plays a major role in Poland’s sea trade, being home to the country’s largest port. It is also an important industrial centre (especially for shipbuilding, petrochemicals and food processing), and it was in Gdansk that the independent trade union Solidarity was born in 1980, which under the leadership of Lech Wałesa helped to bring an end to communist rule in Poland and the wider region.
