Market Focus: Aberdeen, United Kingdom

by Joanna Tano and Marie Conein

Aberdeen, situated on the North Sea coast, is part of the Scottish county of Aberdeenshire, which is located to the north-east of the United Kingdom. The population of the city is approximately 220,000, making Aberdeen the third most populous city in Scotland after Glasgow and Edinburgh.

The oil and gas industry has dominated economic activity in Aberdeen for decades. Many of the leading companies in the sector, such as BP and Shell, have a presence in the city and the industry employs approximately one quarter of the city’s working population. Marine and engineering companies are also prevalent, providing complementary services that assist in the drilling process. Boosted by the needs of the oil and gas industry, Aberdeen is a major port city, with its harbour handling approximately 5 million tonnes of cargo per year.

In addition to being known as an oil city, Aberdeen is referred to as the Granite City, as in the 19th Century it was the world centre for the granite
