Developing Asia: Asian economies seek to fully emerge on the world stage

Visitors to and denizens of Asia are often impressed at the pace of economic and property development, but also the contrasts between one nation or region and the next, or even from one kilometre to the next.

It is not unusual to see gleaming skyscrapers within view of shantytowns, or vast new industrial parks hard by sleepy tropical fruit plantations. In parts of Asia gleaming airports welcome the visitor, but a short taxi ride later, untreated sewage becomes obvious. Laos is in Southeast Asia, but so is hyper-developed Bangkok. Whither India, while China marches forward?
