California Unveils $98 Billion High Speed Rail Plan

The California High Speed Rail Authority board formally requested a multibillion-dollar appropriation to start construction on the high-speed rail project in 2012. The request came on the heels of the release of the Authority’s 2012 business plan, which upped the expected cost of the high-speed rail network to $98.5 billion. The authority adopted a funding plan that seeks $3.3 billion in federal grants and $2.7 billion in state bonds to begin building a first leg, 225-kilometer segment of track through California’s Central Valley. The price tag for the line was $33 billion in 2008. According to the recently released bullet train business plan, the $98 billion cost could jump an additional $19 billion depending on the route and construction features.

That non-operational segment would run mostly through farmland from Chowchilla to Bakersfield. The request will now go to Gov. Jerry Brown’s ad
