REITs bounce back big in October

After a merciless September that saw the FTSE NAREIT All Equity REITs Index lose 5.61 percent in just one month, the index bounced back in a big way in October, returning 8.99 percent, giving it a 23.55 percent total return for 2014, compared with a 2.86 percent total return for all of 2013.

By sector, the big winners were manufactured homes, which returned 15.14 percent for the month, and self-storage, which returned 12.18 percent, bringing the two sectors’ year-to-date returns to 38.94 percent and 29.38 percent, respectively. That said, the two niche property types account for less than 5 percent of the REITs in the index.
