Ohio SERS searches for third REIT manager

by Reg Clodfelter

The $12.18 billion School Employees Retirement System of Ohio has issued an RFP for an investment manager who can provide long-only, passive management of a U.S. REIT portfolio. Ohio SERS is looking for one manager who will receive an initial allocation of $150 million.

Potential mangers must have a three-year history in investment management employing passive strategies for U.S. real estate securities as of Dec. 31, 2013. Board documents note that simulated or back-tested results for any part of the three-year period will not be accepted. Potential mangers must also have at least $1 billion of assets under management invested in listed real estate security strategies as of Dec. 31, 2013. The deadline for proposals is April 7.

The new manager will be the pension fund’s third REIT investment manager. The two existing global REIT managers are Clarion Partners and Invesco Real Estate.

As of Dec. 31, 2013, Ohio
