Head of Towers Watson’s real estate research team passes away

by Andrea Waitrovich

Peter Lewis, head of Towers Watson’s U.S. real estate investment manager research team, has passed away at the age of 61 from unexpected causes. Lewis joined the firm in 2011.

During his long career in the commercial real estate industry, Lewis served in a variety of capacities. Previously, he was a senior investment officer director of Liberty Mutual Group’s $2.5 billion real estate investment portfolio, overseeing a global strategy that included commingled funds, direct investments, joint ventures, co-investments and senior commercial mortgage participations.  Prior to Liberty Mutual, Lewis built and managed a real estate and real asset investment portfolio for the MIT Investment Management Company and MIT’s pension plan. Also he worked for Leona Helmsley, and among other projects, helped oversee the redevelopment and refurbishment of the Helmsley Palace (now the New York Palace).

He had more than 20 years in the real estate sector. His experience included real estate development, asset management, and financing, involving multifamily, office, retail, hospitality, and mixed-use properties, while working for real estate companies in Boston and New York.

Lewis has been a long-term member of Institutional Real Estate, Inc.’s editorial advisory board. Known for his wit and creativity, he often would make comments in the form of a poem drafted specially for the occasion.

Lewis was a Registered Architect, a former board member of the Pension Real Estate Association and was a member of the Urban Land Institute. He earned an MBA from New York University and a master’s in architecture from Harvard University.
