by Zoë Wolff

Total nonfarm payroll increased by 223,000 in April, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number is a significant increase from the March figures, which were revised down from 126,000 jobs to 85,000 jobs. Job gains occurred in professional and business services, healthcare, and construction, while mining jobs continued to decline.

The unemployment rate was 5.4 percent for April. As reported in March, the unemployment rate has sat around 5.5 percent since February. The year started off strong with the lowest unemployment rates to start a year since 2008.
