8 Questions: Middle-Market Firms Provide Yield Play

Prospect Capital Corporation finances middle-market companies to drive investment returns.

BDCs are publicly registered companies that invest in small- and mid-sized businesses. The BDC structure was created by Congress in 1980 under amendments to the Investment Company Act of 1940.

One of the leading managers in the space, New York-based Prospect Capital Management, was founded in 1988 and has a history of investing in companies and managing high-yielding debt and equity investments using both private partnerships and publicly traded closed-end fund structures.

Its flagship fund, the Prospect Capital Corporation, has been publicly traded since it went public in 2004.

David Belzer is managing director and has been with Prospect Capital Management since November 2004, just a few months after the firm’s IPO.
