Bedazzled: A Lesson On Making Wishes Count

One of my favorite movies of all time is an old British comedy, Bedazzled. The plot of the movie involves the age-old story of a young man (played by Dudley Moore) who sells his soul to the Devil (played by Peter Cooke) in exchange for 10 wishes.

Throughout the movie, the Devil does everything he can to comply with the young man’s requests, but after all, he is the Devil and has to stay in character, continuing to make life on earth miserable. So somehow, the young man’s wishes never seem to end up the way he expects.

He wastes his first wish, for example, by asking for an ice cream bar. The Devil walks him over to an ice cream vendor, asks him for the money, and buys him the ice cream. “That’s not what I wanted,” argues the young man. “I wanted to see some magic.”

“Well, then,” warns the Devil. “You have to be more specific.”
