Expanding Horizons: investors looking to emerging markets

Infrastructure has been a hot new investment class over the last few years, and it is only growing in popularity, evidenced by the fact that nearly half (49 percent) of infrastructure investors expect to increase their allocations to the sector in the next 18 months, according to The Ascent of Real Assets, the latest survey and report from BlackRock.

But the fact that investors are looking to put more capital into infrastructure isn’t nearly as surprising as where the report found they are looking to spend it.

Among investors looking to increase their infrastructure allocations in the next 18 months, nearly half (45 percent) are interested in brownfield investments in emerging markets, only 6 percent less than those interested in brownfield in developed markets, and just as many are interested in greenfield in emerging markets (23 percent) as those interested in greenfield in developed markets.
