REITs outperform stock market, property funds in Q2

Though not quite as impressive as the first quarter numbers, REITs continued their strong 2014 during the second quarter by returning 7.13 percent, according to the FTSE NAREIT All Equity REITs Index. The REIT index significantly outperformed the NCREIF Property Index (2.91 percent), the NCREIF ODCE fund index (2.93 percent), the S&P 500 Index (5.23 percent), the Russell 3000 (4.87 percent), Barclays Capital Government Bond index (1.34 percent) and Barclays Capital Government/Credit index (1.82 percent).

Through the first two quarters of 2014, the All Equity REITs Index has returned 16.25 percent, significantly outpacing the 2.86 percent return from 2013, which saw three consecutive quarters of negative returns after a strong first quarter.
