Los Angeles County MTA to construct $1.4b subway extension

by Andrea Waitrovich

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority has announced plans to construct a second, 2.6-mile extension of the city’s Purple Line subway through Beverly Hills, Calif., and Century City, Calif.

The contract value of the recently announced extension, the Westside Purple Line Extension Section 2, is anticipated to be approximately $1.4 billion. The project will include two new underground stations at the intersections of Wilshire Boulevard/Rodeo Drive and Constellation Boulevard/Avenue of the Stars.

Construction is currently under way on Section 1 of the Purple Line extension. The project aims to be completed before the 2024 Olympic Games, for which the International Olympic Committee is expected to choose among Los Angeles, Paris and Budapest in September.

At completion, the Purple Line is expected to extend nine miles west of the current terminus at Wilshire Boulevard and Western Avenue, adding a total of seven new stations. The total development is expected to cost $6.3 billion.

The final phase, with stops in Westwood and West Los Angeles, is slated to open by 2035.
