Facebook to open data center in New Mexico

by Andrea Waitrovich

Facebook has plans to build a 250-acre data center facility in an industrial area in Los Lunas, N.M. The contractor will be Fortis Construction. Facebook is scheduled to break ground in October, and the data center is expected to be fully operational by late 2018.

Construction will be in six phases. The first phase will cost $250 million and bring an estimated 30 to 50 data center jobs and several hundred construction jobs. The Public Service Company of New Mexico will construct solar facilities to power the data center.

New Mexico state officials hope the Facebook project will have more major companies following, to improve the job market. Gov. Susana Martinez of New Mexico released a statement on the decision: “Facebook is a stellar, cutting-edge, high-tech company, and it’s an honor to welcome them to New Mexico. Making our state more competitive for jobs and new investment is critical to growing our private sector and diversifying our economy.
