Canadian investors number one U.S. real estate player

The numbers show Canada is the big investor that is being overshadowed by new players such as Singapore and China coming into the U.S. property markets in recent years.

During the period February 2014 to February 2015, Canadian investors were ranked the number one foreign investor in U.S. real estate, totaling more than $15.99 billion in total volume, according to Real Capital Analytics. In the past 12 months, Canada-based investors have acquired more than 1,000 properties, continuing to purchase more than any other foreign investor. Canada has been active since 2008, which Canada was ranked the number two foreign investor in U.S. real estate, totaling more than $4.8 billion in total volume.

Canadian investors have been making headlines thus far this year in high-priced deals. Brookfield Asset Management reached a definitive agreement to acquire Rouse Properties Inc. in a deal valued at about $2.8 billion. The deal is expected to close during the third quarter
