Asian investors to set record for outbound investment in real estate

by Andrea Waitrovich

Investment in global commercial real estate by investors based in Asia is on track to reach a new record in 2016, according to new research from CBRE.

Asian investment in global commercial real estate reached nearly $27 billion during first half 2016, dominated by Chinese investors who accounted for 60 percent of the total. Asian outbound investment has increased to more than $47 billion in 2015 from $4.3 billion in 2009. Approximately 80 percent of Asian investors’ capital outlay in 2009 was in domestic markets; this proportion has steadily declined in subsequent years, falling to 47 percent in 2015.

Asian investors showed a strong appetite for U.S. assets during first half 2016. Some $14.0 billion was invested in the Americas, accounting for 52 percent of outbound investment, followed by $6.1 billion in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (22 percent), $5.4 billion in Asia (20 percent) and $1.6 billion in the Pacific (6 percent).
